Lot Essay

With their pierced serpentine aprons, these fauteuils are of similar design to several fauteuils by Nicolas Heurtaut of this period. One pair by Heurtaut of circa 1755 is illustrated in B. Pallot L'Art du Siège au XVIIIe Siècle en France, Paris, 1987, another pair was sold Ader Picard Tajan, Monte Carlo, 27 May 1984, lot 104 whilst a single fauteuil by Heurtaut, mid-18th century, was sold Sotheby's New York 3 May 1986, lot 68.

Nicolas Heurtaut (maître in 1753) was a menuisier celebrated not only for his sculptural carving but for his contribution to the evolution of rocaille design into the transitional period.
