Lot Essay

This image of the Marlboro man is a portrait of Henry Geldzahler. Geldzahler was Curator of Twentieth Century Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1967-1978, and Commissioner of Cultural Affairs for the City of New York from 1978-1982. He met the artist when Basquiat was seventeen years old, and immediately became an early collector and champion of the artist, and eventually a close friend.
