Lot Essay

Munnings painted a number of pictures at this spot in Hampshire, presumably while staying with the gypsies at hop-picking, with the same pony standing between the overhanging branches of these trees. As was often the case, he experimented with the low evening light casting its shadow from different directions. Here the white pony is bathed in the soft glow of light that was diminishing as the light faded. The rapidity and fluidity of the brushwork is typical of this period as Munnings attempts to record the fleeting effects of light in a landscape.
