Lot Essay

From the beginning of the 17th century onwards the Court in Dresden placed orders with several glass houses in Saxony for glasses for the various Court residences. The decoration followed a set pattern, which remained virtually unaltered: the arms of Saxony, the initials and titles of the elector, and often a date or sometimes the residence for which the glasses were intended, to these elements were added decorative borders, simple plain or dotted lines.

Cf. S. Baumgärtner, Sächisches Glas (Wiesbaden 1977), p.39 for a discussion.
