A rare Cologne pewter-mounted double-handled stoneware jug
Second half 16th century
(Zwillingshenkelkrug) covered in a light brown glaze, the globular body moulded with a central frieze enclosing grotesques alternating with portrait and flower medallions, the shoulders and lower part with stiff leaves and portrait medallions depicting helmetted warriors, the ribbed cylindrical neck with scrolling foliage, applied with a double loop handle, the domed pewter cover connected with t-shaped thumbpiece to the handle

Lot Essay

Double-handled jugs are known from both Cologne-Frechen and Siegburg, but they are very rare. It is not known whether the double handle is a decorative feature or has a practical function.
