Lot Essay

We have assigned the present carving to the N'duleri because it shares many characteristics with those illustrated by Hélène Leloup in her exhaustive catalogue Dogon Statuary, (Paris, 1994). The N'duleri live to the centre of the plateau lying to the north and east of the Bandiagara escarpement in Mali and many of their carvings are found to date from the 16th to 18th centuries. They are characterised by elegant hairstyles (see Pl.130 and the present figure) and the necklace Pl.114.
