Naples, Mid-18th Century and later
Comprising two seated figures of Mary, one in flowing pink silk costume, the other in flowing pink and blue costume; two standing figures of Mary, one in blue silk costume, the other in embroidered cream and blue costume; a figure of Joseph in flowing yellow and purple silk costume; a modern nude wooden baby Jesus; nine female villagers of various sizes and costumes, including the Hag and woman standing in awe; three male villagers of various sizes and costumes; a figure of a sleeping shepherd now mounted as a standing figure, with a staff; eight angels, two of which lack robes and a third lacking head, the other five in flowing silk costumes; and sixteen sheep in various poses, most of the standing figures on later painted wood bases, some costumes original but largely replaced, each inscribed in red paint with an accession number
8½in. (87.5cm.) high the shepherd figure; 13½in. (34.5cm.) high the Joseph figure; 22in. (56cm.) high the largest female villager (43)
