Lot Essay

In the ink study Fusilamiento, José Clemente Orozco eloquently captures the terror, speed, and confusion of a firing squad, and in a broader sense that of the Mexican Revolution itself. In a minimum of gestural ink strokes Orozco captured the same dramatic feeling as the iconic works by Goya and Manet of the same subject. The Revolution was the mother of the Muralists movement and the traumas of its brutality were inescapable.
