Lot Essay

It is believed that he studied under the painter José de Ibarra whom he quickly surpassed through domination of compositions, treatment of figures and a brilliant roccoco palette. He was also known for his draftmanship. His works include traditional religious painting, with a marked preference for allegories as well as portraiture and cityscapes. We can link the present painting to two other Guadalupanas. The first signed and dated 1763, today in the Parish of Santa María de Uribarri in Durango, Vizcaya, and the second, at the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia. The latter one and the present painting are almost identical in composition.
