Lot Essay

Although trained as a physician in Germany, the significant numbers of Maentel's distinctive watercolor portraits attests to an active career as an artist as well. Working in Pennsylvania and Maryland during the early years of his career, Maentel was in New Harmony, Indiana by 1841.
