Lot Essay

Murray Bail noted "the umbrella regularly pops up in Fairweather's work, aside from its visual qualities, it is one of the eight symbols of Chinese Buddhism, a sign of dignity".... "parasol...appears to be a drawing before his large painting completed in 1957 (it) must number among the last of Fairweather's drawings." (M Bail, opcit, p. 128; p. 241)
