Lot Essay

"Following the success of the 'morning' pictures, Gruner struck a fresh note in the 'high' beach scenes. In many of these, breaking water makes a lace-like pattern across the quiet tones of the sand, relieved by dainty suggestions of figures, parasols and flags." (Robert Campbell, "The Art of Gruner", Art in Australia, 23 May 1940, p.31)
