Lot Essay

The present work is a study for the right hand side of a large oil painting entitled, January, 1940, which the artist exhibited at the Royal Academy in that year as no. 268 (see Royal Academy Illustrated, London, 1940, p. 37).

Laura Knight and her husband spent most of the Second World War living near Malvern to avoid the bombing in London. The peace and solace of the Malvern countryside also provided a respite from the artist's various commissions for the War Office Records. The most important of these was the task of representing the Nuremburg War Trials in 1946.
