sold with a study for the contraption, signed and dated 'L.S. Lowry 1963' (lower right) contained in Mervyn Levy's notebook and sold with a copy of his volume of Drawings of L.S. Lowry, London, 1963; a framed letter from L.S.Lowry to Mervyn Levy; and a postcard, signed 'L.S. Lowry' (lower right) bearing a stamp published on 10 July 1967; a photograph of L.S. Lowry's coat rack at The Elms, and a photograph of L.S. Lowry (7)

Lot Essay

The flat cap was given by Lowry to the present owner when he gave the artist a black tie for his birthday. L.S. Lowry took the cap from the coat rack at The Elms and gave it in exchange for the tie. The cap is pictured in the photograph of the coat rack included in this lot.

The stamp depicting Coming out of School, 1927, (Tate Britain)
has been stuck onto a postcard of the same subject and signed by the artist. The stamp was published by the Post Office on 10 July 1967 and was from the first series of postage stamps to reproduce paintings by British artists. Works by George Stubbs and Sir Thomas Lawrence were also reproduced.
