The seal, properly inscribed IN GOD WE HOPE, was adopted by the port of the city of Newport in 1821. It appears on a punchbowl made for John Jay (1745-1829) who, though a New Yorker, was namesake of a Providence China trade ship. (See J. Mudge, Chinese Export Porcelain in North America, p. 217). A part tea service with this decoration is in the collection of the Winterthur Museum. See E. Gordon, Collecting Chinese Export Porcelain, p. 155.
