A RARE AMERICAN EAGLE CIDER JUG AND COVER
circa 1805
Finely enamelled with a spreadwinged eagle holding an E PLURIBUS UNUM banner in his beak, a striped shield on his chest and a starry sky enclosed by blue clouds and a sunburst above him, gilt-enriched blue enamel floral clusters on the sides and underglaze blue diaper borders

This representation of the great seal of the United States is found on the 1803 ownership certificate of the New York China trader Elizabeth. A pair of goblets with this same decoration is in the collection of the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, bequest of Hope Brown Russell. See J. Mudge, op. cit., p. 203
