Lot Essay

The sitter was Helen Georgiana, second daughter of Owen Grant, who was Clerk of the Desk at the House of Lords. She married Welbore St Clair Baddeley, J.P., of Castle Hall, Painswick, in the mid-1890s, and this portrait was painted at about the same time (1896) in Rome. Marie Stillman had been living there since 1886, when her husband, the American journalist W.J. Stillman, became the Times correspondent in the city. The couple remained in Rome until 1898, when Stillman retired and they settled in Surrey.

Mrs Baddeley was also drawn circa 1907 by Augustus John.
