We are grateful to Frances Stenlake for her assistance preparing the following catalogue entry.

Applehayes is situated near Clayhidon in the Blackdown Hills. The estate was purchased in 1909 by Harold Bertram Harrison, who held open house for Camden Town painters. Bevan first visited in 1912, and although after 1915 wartime conditions forced Harrison to discontinue his hospitality, Bevan returned to the area regularly for the rest of his life.

The present work is a study for a painting of the same title which was exhibited London, David Messum, Spring Exhibition, 1989, no. 35, illustrated.
