Lot Essay

Hunt's first visit to Whitby was in 1874, after which he seems to have returned to the town every year. Hunt held an enormous affection for this picturesque port and exhibited many views of Whitby and nearby Robin Hood's Bay during the remaining twenty years of his life.

A similar view of Whitby, by Hunt was sold in The Fuller Collection of Victorian Landscape Watercolours, 7 April 2000, lot 27 (£11,750).
