E. Morley (early 19th century)

Details
E. Morley (early 19th century)

Delphinium grandiflorum hybrids (bouquet of double-flowered Delpiniums)
signed 'E. Morley' (or 'Mosley') (lower right, partially erased and indistinct) and inscribed 'Delphinium Polyandria Trigynia' (lower centre)
pencil and watercolour
18 3/8 x 12 inches (467 x 320mm.), framed and glazed

An excellent decorative bouquet of the flower-spikes of four or five varieties of double-flowered delphiniums, showing five colour variations: white, lilac, pink very pale pink and purple. The delphinium had been grown as a garden flower from the 16th century, but, unaccountably, did not achieve the prominence it deserved until late in nineteenth century. To judge from the inscription, the present bouquet probably dates from the first half of the 19th century, and therefore represents an early example of the revival of interest in the genus.
