The pocket version of Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Ortelius's friends, Philip Galle, the engraver, and Pieter Heyns, the poet, are traditionally credited with the initiative for this reduced format atlas. Heyns, who had translated the Theatrum into Dutch for the 1571 edition, composed the text in verses, which accompanies the hand-coloured maps engraved by Galle. This enormously popular version of Ortelius's atlas was also translated into French, and continued to be published with varying printers and engravers through to the 18th century.
