Lot Essay

Bartlett studied in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Gérôme, and at the Académie Julian under Bougereau, and French influence permeates his work. He was particularly indebted to Bastien-Lepage whose treatment of pastoral themes influenced many English painters at the turn of the century. Although he lived mainly in London, Kent and Ventnor on the Isle of Wight, Bartlett travelled frequently to paint in France, Italy and Ireland. Many of his subjects feature the sea, and these were amongst his most popular works.

Sea Wrack is commonly known as 'Bladderwrack' in Ireland, where it was collected as fertiliser for crops. It has been suggested that the location of this picture is Galway Bay, Connemara.
