Lot Essay

Ansdell initially visited Spain in the company of John Phillip. His first work inspired by this country to be exhibited at the Royal Academy was entitled Mules drinking, Seville and was sold in these rooms on 20 October 1998, lot 123 (£8,000).

When the present painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1873 (no. 132) it was described thus, 'She is mounted, and is passing over an elevated rocky path: the animals are, as usual with this artist, well drawn' (p. 167).
