Lot Essay

Circular paintings by Godward of this size were only painted during his middle Roman period. Chloris of 1902, Byrsina of 1915, Lucilia of 1917 and Chrispenella of 1921 are comparable examples. In Androclea we see a beautiful black-haired Greek maiden, bust-length, in profile and set against a marble wall. Her red burgundy dress and badana of yellow with red fleck colourfully highlight this meditative painting.

We are grateful to Professor Vern Grosvenor Swanson of the Springville Museum, Utah, his help in the preparation of this catalogue entry.
