He studied at Birkenhead Art School and later at St John's Wood School of Art and at the RA Schools. He settled in London and amongst his earliest works are his illustrations for the Mrs Molesworth series. As a child Leslie had played a game with his father which involved naming an animal and thinking of a rhyming activity for the animal to perform in an imaginary garden. Many of these characters years later formed the basis of Johnny Crow's Garden which was published in 1903, to much critical acclaim. His drawing is characterised by strong draftsmanship and a humorous imagination. Brooke's talent lay in the illustration of children's books and giving children the natural answers to questions about animals in a most unique and charming way. THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN
