Lot Essay

This subject matter was very popular in the late 18th/early 19th Century. Compare the oval reverse glass painting with the same subject, but the figures and ship are mirror-reversed, illustrated by Carl L. Crossman, The Decorative Arts of The China Trade, 1991, p.217, pl.121.
