Lot Essay

Descending along the same family lines as the sideboard in the previous lot, these samplers are the work of a mother and daughter, two of the sideboard's earliest owners. The first, made by Cynthia Taft, pre-dates her 1798 marriage to Nathaniel Butler and their subsequent removal to New York. The second was made by the couple's eldest daughter, Mary Ann, while the family was living in Mexico, New York.
