KAFKA, Franz (1883-1924). Amerika, Munich: Kurt Wolff, 1927.
8° (210 x 138mm.) (margins faintly browned), original printed wrappers (head and tail of spine lightly chipped, a few light waterstains on spine, spine slightly faded). Provenance: bookplate of J. v. Doveren.
FIRST EDITION, rarely found in wrappers. Like most of Kafka's works Amerika, an unfinished novel originally entitled Der Verschollene, was published posthumously. In his testament Kafka had ordered that his unpublished novels should be destroyed. His friend and executor of his will Max Brod, however, decided to disregard Kafka's request and prepared the manuscripts for publication. Caputo-Mayr & Herz p. 16.
