RIMSKY-KORSAKOV, Nikolay Andreyevich (1844-1908). Autograph letter signed ('N.R. Korsakov') to Mikhail Osipovich [Delin], St Petersburg, 30 January 1907, in Russian, 3 pages, 8vo.
A letter to his French translator, discussing the Paris premier of Sadko. Rimsky-Korsakov refers to 'two very small references' to the opera in the press, and discusses the publication of the opera in French translation, preferring the title 'Légende lyrique en 7 tableaux' if 'Opera-Légende en 7 tableaux' is impossible. The songs of the guests are to be issued in a separate edition with translation, but only for their original voices, as the composer finds an arrangement for other voices undesirable. His new opera [Kitezh] is to be performed in February. He complains of the incivility of Marti in not sending him a notification of the successful performance of Sadko: 'A composer requires performers, but also performers need composers (even Parisian performers)'. He concludes 'I am glad about the performance of Sadko in Paris, but it doesn't fill me with happiness. That's my point of view on these matters'.
Rimsky-Korsakov met the Parisian musicologist and translator Mikhail Delin on his visit to the Exposition Universelle in 1889. As well as his translation of Sadko, Delin produced the French text for Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin.
