Details
SILCHER, Friedrich (1789-1860), composer and folksong collector. Autograph letter signed to an unidentified correspondent, Tübingen, 4 April 1858, in German, including three versions of the folk song 'Prinz Eugen', and two other musical quotations, 48 bars in total, 6 pages, 8vo; [and] a manuscript copy of Silcher's song 'Im Mai', with an autograph annotation by Silcher, one page, 4to (some wear to folds, restored, mounted in archival sleeves).
The letter refers to the folk songs of Upper Swabia, and the use of dialect in songs ('I have presented them as they would have been sung by an inn-keeper's daughter'). Silcher discusses at length the song 'Prinz Eugen', giving transcriptions of the three different time-signatures in which it has been recorded, and enquiring in which form his correspondent has performed it. Silcher's annotation to the manuscript of 'Im Mai' identifies the melody as being his own, 'but so mangled that it is scarcely recognisable'.
One of the most notable researchers of the folksongs of Germany in the 19th Century, Friedrich Silcher was director of Tübingen University from 1817 to 1860. He was a champion of popular musical education, and viewed the folksong as an important means to this end.
