There were two prime ministers and three Lord Chancellor's in 1868. Benjamin Disraeli (1804-81) was succeeded in office by William Gladstone (1809-98) in December 1868. Lord Cairns was Lord Chancellor briefly, having replaced Lord Chelmsford, before Lord Hatherley was appointed under the new Liberal government.
