A RARE .50 SHARPS FACTORY METALLIC CARTRIDGE SPORTING CONVERSION HEAVY BUFFALO RIFLE, IN TURN CUSTOMISED BY J.P. LOWER OF DENVER, COLORADO, NO. C,46865, CIRCA 1860, CONVERTED BY SHARPS, CIRCA 1880, MODIFIED BY LOWER, CIRCA 1880
The Sharps carbine Civil War era action and butt stock with added double-set triggers, and long-range vernier rear sight, saddle ring and loop removed, lockplate with pre-Model 1874 patent dates, heavy octagonal barrel marked OLD RELIABLE (post-1876), vacant rear-sight dovetail, globe fore-sight, marked at breech CAL. 50 and J.P. LOWER, the barrel re-bored and modified by J.P. Lower to a part-round/part-octagonal configuration

Brown patina to barrel, stock and fore-end refinished typical of these conversions, tang once broken now repaired.
John P. Lower of Philadelphia and Denver, 1833-1928. Apprenticed with J.C. Grubb & Co., Philadelphia, and later partnered with Carlos Gove of Denver. Famous as a gunsmith and retailer, Lower was also a reknowned shot.
