Lot Essay

In 1926 Charley Toorop made several paintings with subjects inspired by the industry and social life of Rotterdam. In these years she developed a friendship wiht J.J.P. Oud and it is very likely that she stayed with him for a while. In a letter to H.P. Bremmer from March 1926 she mentioned a sejour in Rotterdam. There are five monumental paintings from that year depicting the harbour of Rotterdam. Besides the lifeliness of the Maas she was also attracted to subjects as interiors, cafes and music halls. (Brederoo, op.cit, p. 199-203)
