Lot Essay

Girodet's series of sixteen drawings, probably made at the end of his life, was only lithographed posthumously in 1826 by Girodet's pupils. The lithographs all measure 197 x 153 mm., the same size as the present drawing, and are all inserted within double lines, J. Boutet-Loyer, Girodet, dessins du musée, exhib. cat., Musée Girodet, Montargis, 1983, no. 87.
The drawings, including the present sheet, were mentioned by the engraver Coupin, Oeuvres posthumes de Girodet-Trioson, Paris, 1829, I, p. 89. Three of them re-appeared as part of a group of drawings by Girodet at Sotheby's, New York, 16 February 1994, lots 2-4, illustrated.
