Lot Essay

The sitter was the eldest daughter and heiress of Alexander Bruce, 2nd Earl of Kincardine (d.1681), and his wife Veronica, daughter of Corneille van Arson van Sommelsdyck, Lord of Sommelsdyck and Spyck in Holland. Lady Mary Bruce married William Cochrane of Ochiltree on 19 April 1681. Their daughter Anne married Sir George Preston, 4th Bt., and the picture remained at the Preston seat of Valleyfield House, Kircudbright, until the death of Sir Robert Preston. Patrick Nasmyth painted views of Valleyfield for Sir Robert Preston, circa 1805
(see J. Harris, The Artist and the Country House, London, 1979, no.387).
