Lot Essay

The present work is an autograph version, with many pentiments, of the painting in the collection of Saint Mary's Art Guild, Detroit. According to McKerrow (Mary McKerrow, The Faeds, A Biography, 1981, p. 34) the original painting, which was painted in 1856, was bought by the publisher James Keith of Princes Street, Edinburgh for £200. The composition was engraved by William Hall.
