Lot Essay

The central medallion, which is found on several services with different designs around the rim, is taken from engravings of 'L 'Urne Mysterieuse' published after the execution of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette in 1793, where the profiles of the King and Queen are outlined by the stem and foot of the urn, and those of their children are hidden in the branches of the weeping willow, beneath which sits a mourning figure.
