Lot Essay

The present paintings can be dated to the last years of Tempesta's life and compared with a nocturnal landscape, and a river Landscape both in the collection of the Prince of Liechtenstein, Vaduz, the latter of which hold strong compositional likenesses to the right-hand painting in the present lot (see M. Roethlisberger, Cavalier Pietro Tempesta and his Time, 1970, p. 113, nos. 284-5, illustrated).
