We are grateful to Sebastian Schütze for confirming the attribution from a transparency. He dates the present picture circa 1626, comparing the facial type of the saint with those of Saints Cosmas and Damian (S. Schütze and T. Willette, Massimo Stanzione, 1992, p. 191, no. A6, p. 17, color pl. I, p. 271, fig. 99) and the putti with those in the Adoration of the Shepherds in the Capitolo dei Padri in the Certosa di san Martino, Naples (ibid., p. 192, no. A9, p. 275, fig. 105). Schütze considers the present painting as offereing significant documentation of Stanzione's development from Roman-based Caravaggism to his characteristic Neapolitan manner.
