Lot Essay

Denise Bazetoux will include this painting in her forthcoming Lebasque catalogue raisonné.

In 1923, the year before he moved permanently to Le Cannet, Lebasque was working at Le Pradet and Toulon in the South of France. Ever since 1906, when he had first visited the Midi at the suggestion of his friend Manguin, Lebasque had been fascinated by the light of the south. Marthe Lebasque recalls her father's contentment at this time; 'He had a happy disposition, he was content in the middle of his family. He was happy about painting...He adored us forming a happy image. He felt that very strongly, and conveyed that image with such strength in his paintings' (quoted in exh. cat. Lebasque 1865-1937, San Francisco 1986, p. 113). In Lebasque's calm and serene depictions of his family in the heat and light of the South of France, he presents an idealised and intimate image of family life and domesticity. The present work portrays a peaceful and idyllic image of Lebasque's garden at Le Pradet and most probably depicts one of the artist's daughters, accompanied by the family's maid from Martinique, Aurore.
