Lot Essay
Cyrille Martin has confirmed the authenticity of this painting.
The present work was executed during Martin's prolonged trip to Venice in 1909-10. Venice held a particular fascination for Martin and he delighted in the reflections of the sky and buildings in the canals and in the clear, strong light. 'Quelle surprise n'est ce pas de se trouver tout à coup dans ce silence entouré de palais baignant dans des reflets si picturables. Enivre-toi...de cette ambiance artistique et puis tu méditeras et créeras' (H. Martin, letter to his son Jacques, 24 April 1925).
Following the exhibition of his work at the Petit Palais in April 1935, Henri Martin wrote to the then owner of Le Palais Jaune, who had purchased the work from him in 1910, asking to buy the painting back from her. After inviting Mme Habert to his studio, Henri Martin explained that 'Je vous montrerais les tableaux que je vous proposerais en echange de votre "Venise" que j'aimerais avoir n'ayant aucun souvenir de celle scène peinte en 1910' (H. Martin, letter to Mme Habert, 20 May 1935).
The artist's correspondence with Mme Habert will accompany the present lot.
