Lot Essay
Werner Spies will include this painting in his forthcoming supplement to the Ernst catalogue raisonné.
This painting was acquired in 1935 by F.C. Boldsen (1877-1954) founder of the Copenhagen General Building Society, known today as K.A.B. Boldsen had a great vision about modern housing which continues to inspire Danish housing even today. He was also an important and far-sighted collector of modern art. He bought works by young Danish artists like Richard Mortensen, Vilhelm Bjerke Petersen, Wilhelm Freddie, Asger Jorn, Vilhelm Lunstrom, Harald Giersing and Henry Heerup. Boldsen was greatly interested in Surrealism. He collected pictures by Magritte, Tanguy, Dominguez and Ernst, as well as by the Swedish surrealist Halmstadt Group, which included Erik Olsen, Axel Olsson, F. Thorén, S. Jonson and G. A. Nilson. Part of his collection was sold in Copenhagen after his death.
