The movement by Jean-Baptiste Duchesne Circa 1720
The circular glazed gilt-bronze and enamelled dial with incised Arabic and Roman blue enamelled numerals within a foliate border and with blued-steel hands within a gadrooned surround, set into a circular drum surmounted by a group of Pegasus and Perseus, flanking a palm tree, the sides applied with strapwork, C-scrolls and acanthus with floral trellis panels above a rockwork C-scroll apron with Herculean lion's pelt, the movement signed J.B. Duchesne À Paris, with later escapement and pendulum, inscribed on back of door Sir P. Sassoon, with a paper label inscribed in ink 1425

Provenance
Sir Philip Sassoon, Bt., 25 Park Lane, London, W.1., recorded in the Large Drawing Room in the pre-1927 inventory and depicted there in Sir John Lavery's picture of the room, 'The Red Hat', dated 1925.
Thence by descent to the Marquess of Cholmondeley, Houghton Hall, Norfolk, sold in these Rooms, 8 December 1994, lot 18 (£67,500).
Jean-Baptiste Duchesne, maître in 1723.
The son of a poor artisan, Jean-Baptiste Duchesne's apprenticeship was sponsored by the hôpital de la Trinité. Married to Jean Mesnard, he was received as maître-horloger on 12 January 1723. Established in the rue de la Madelaine de la ville-l'Evêque, he fathered two sons, Nicolas and Jean-François, both of whom became maître-horlogers.
In 1726 he supplied the duc de Bouillon with a movement for a pendule à équation, which was the subject of a discourse at the Académie des Sciences. Also Horloger to the comte d'Evreux, Duchesne died circa 1733.
