Lot Essay

The legs and gadrooning on the frieze leave doubt as to whether they are 18th century or later. However, the top of the inside of the frieze has been cut out to inset the 18th century marble top. The table must therefore predate this marriage, which is most likely to have taken place when a huge amount of French furniture was added to English collections in the second quarter of the 19th century.
