Lot Essay

The foliage-carved shaped apron of this cabinet relates to a commode with similarly elaborate apron and with remarkable rococo handles which in turn relate to a group of commodes attributed to the St Martin's Lane cabinet-maker, John Channon. Gilbert and Murdoch point out that the latter, almost certainly on account of its shaped apron and cabriole legs and paw feet, has more in common with a group of furniture tentatively ascribed to William Hallett (C. Gilbert & T. Murdoch, John Channon and brass-inlaid furniture, New Haven & London, 1993, p.96 & fig. 111; P. Macquoid, The Age of Mahogany, London, 1908, p. 146, fig. 128).
