AN EARLY VICTORIAN EBONY, BURR-WALNUT AND MARQUETRY TILT-TOP CENTRE TABLE
The circular quarter-veneered top banded in tulipwood and amboyna centred by a panel depicting a Chinese man on an ebony ground, the ebony-banded border inlaid with scrolling foliage and exotic birds above a balustrade with four pavilions and four urns, within a moulded ebonised edge above a rosewood frieze, on a triangular spreading shaft inlaid with Chinese pavilions surrounded by foliage, on a concave-sided canted triangular base, on scrolled solid rosewood paw feet
29½ in. (75 cm.) high; 53¼ in. (135 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The altar-pedestal 'loo' or centre table has its top marquetried in ebony in the Louis Quatorze manner with a Chinese figurative medallion and flowered ribbon border, and relates to marquetry tables associated with the celebrated dealer furniture maker of William IV's reign, Edward Holmes Baldock, who retired in 1841 (C. Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, vol II, London, 1978, no. 395). His tables may have been manufactured by Robert Black who was established at his Tottenham Court Road premises in 1820's as a 'Cabinet inlayer and Buhl Manufacturer'.
