Lot Essay

A study for the figure of Neptune in the drawing of Homer saved by Time from the Ruins of the World, now in the Musée Magnan, Dijon. The present sheet was formerly given to Doyen by Sandoz but reattributed to Greuze by Pierre Rosenberg in 1976. To the right of the composition, Neptune riding on the crest of a wave points to the figure of Homer lifted up by Time, Dijon, Musée des Beaux-Arts, Greuze, exhib. cat., 1977, no. 105.
