Lot Essay

Similar in handling to sheets in an album of drawings depicting Roman monuments and scenes of everyday life given to the Louvre in 1955, V. Carlson, Hubert Robert, Drawings & Watercolors, exhib. cat., National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., 1979, nos. 25-6.
Like most of the drawings in the album, the composition is first sketched in wash before being outlined in pen and brown ink, a technical distinction which typifies drawings from Robert's late Roman period of the mid 1760's.
