Lot Essay

After the picture in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence, dated to 1540/5. The sitter in the Pitti picture, formerly in the della Rovere collection at Urbino until 1631, was traditionally identified as the Duke of Norfolk. That view has since been abandoned, and other suggestions have been proposed, including that the work depicts the jurist Ippolito Riminaldi.
