A Chinese soapstone vase
19th Century
of tapering rectangular shape, carved with elephant-mask and loose-ring handles to the narrow sides, the front and back with taotie masks within bands of stylised stiff leaves, with a carved and pierced stand -- 10¾in. (27.2cm.) high; and a cinnabar lacquer circular box and cover, the cover carved in relief with figures in an garden scene, the sides with panels of flower blooms between geometric designs, all within key-fret borders -- 6 5/8in. (16.8cm.) diam., (minute nicks to foot on vase, lacquer with restoration).
